Basketball opportunities for Boys and Girls in grades 2 through 6.
Players younger than 2nd grade can explore options at the YMCA. Players older than 6th grade will participate on school teams.
Boys - Rec
All Boys in our program are required to play in our internal Rec League.
Grades 2, 3 and 4 are run as individual grade leagues. Grades 5 and 6 are combined into one league. Each league is divided up into teams and participate in practices and games throughout the season.
Our Rec leagues are typically two activities per week with one week night and one weekend.
Boys - Travel
While all boys in the program participate in our Rec leagues, some players desire additional basketball opportunities and further growth. For these players we offer a Travel program.
While there is no tryout for our Rec program, players must tryout and be selected for our Travel teams.
Please understand and note that participating in Travel basketball represents a sizeable increase in time commitment and additional cost. Travel teams typically have an additional two weeknight practices per week plus a weekend external league game through December and January. Travel teams also participate in tournaments throughout the season but are mostly concentrated in the January/February time frame.
We typically have two Travel teams in the 3rd grade, two in the 4th grade, three in the 5th grade and three in the 6th grade. However, these numbers can vary depending on level of interest. Where there are two teams in the grade, the teams will be split evenly from a talent/ability standpoint. Where there are more than two teams in the grade, two teams will be split evenly from a talent/ability standpoint and the third team will be a developmental team.
Because we do not offer a Travel program for 2nd graders, any 2nd graders with accelerated skills are permitted to try out for a 3rd grade Travel team. Please note that for players of similar skill levels, 3rd grade players will be selected over 2nd grade players.
Note: All players must play for teams representing the grade they are in. The only exception is 2nd graders who make a 3rd grade travel team have the option of playing in either 2nd or 3rd grade Rec and would participate on a 3rd grade travel team
Girls – League
All Girls in our program are required to play in a League. Due to numbers, we are not able to run internal leagues on the Girls side and so the teams formed play in leagues in local external leagues (Barberton and Springfield for example).
We do have a workout for all the participating girls but it is only to help determine team assignments. All girls wishing to play are welcome to play and will be placed on a team.
While the goal is to have grade specific teams, numbers and skill levels sometimes mean that there is some mixing of grades. The exception is 3rd graders who are fully integrated into 4th grade teams.
Teams participating in external leagues typically have 2-3 activities per week with 1-2 practices plus a game on the weekend.
The only exception to the participation in external leagues is Girls 2nd grade. Girls in 2nd grade will have one practice a week to work on skills/drills and to have some scrimmage time to implement those skills in preparation for future years.
Girls - Tournament
While all girls in the program participate in the league activities mentioned above, some players desire additional basketball opportunities and further growth. For these players we offer Tournament play.
While there is no tryout for our League program, players must tryout and be selected for our Tournament teams. There is an additional cost to participating on a Tournament team over the fees associated with the League teams.
Tournament activities typically pick up where the League activities leave off with a little bit of overlap in January while the Leagues are winding down and Tournaments are starting. Tournament teams typically have two weeknight practices per week plus weekend tournaments through late February or mid-March.
We typically field as many Girls teams as we have players desiring to play.
